The director of the Technological Institute for Training in Mountain Agriculture in Tizi Ouzou, Hocine Meziani, announced the launch of the first training course in olive oil tasting.
He explained that the course was held last week with the participation of around twenty people, including agricultural sector staff and oil producers, aiming to enable participants to assess the quality of virgin and extra virgin olive oil through tasting.
He added that the course was led by a tasting specialist trainer from the Technical Institute for Fruit Tree and Vine Cultivation, alongside another trainer trained at the same institute, who had benefited from training courses both in Algeria and abroad, particularly in Tunisia.
Meziani noted that these training courses target professionals and staff working in the olive sector, as well as other stakeholders in the field from the provinces of Tizi Ouzou, Boumerdes, Bejaia and Bouira, which fall within the institute's area of activity.
He also announced that the institute is preparing to train a group of tasters at the provincial level, who will in turn be responsible for training all professionals in olive cultivation and oil production who wish to specialise in olive oil tasting.
Meziani concluded by noting that olive cultivation accounts for about 80% of all fruit trees in Tizi Ouzou province, highlighting that the institute offers several training programmes covering all stages of the olive sector, from tree cultivation through to the tasting stage.
