Belgium-based Oleon, a subsidiary of the French natural sustainability group Avril, has officially inaugurated a new esterification unit at its facility in Conroe, Texas. This move marks a significant expansion of the company's North American production capabilities, focusing on the conversion of renewable oils and fats into high-value specialty esters.

The new unit, which became fully operational in September, represents Oleon's first esterification facility in the United States. Through this chemical process, the plant utilizes natural raw materials, including animal fats like tallow and vegetable oils such as soybean oil, to produce esters used across diverse industries. These products serve as sustainable ingredients for cosmetics, shampoos, soaps, and lubricants, and are also utilized in the oil and gas sector.

David Van De Gejuchte, the plant manager at Oleon Conroe, highlighted the strategic importance of the site. He noted that the esterification unit provides the flexibility to manufacture a broad portfolio of specialty esters and custom formulations directly in North America. This capability, integrated with the existing Conroe infrastructure, establishes a robust manufacturing platform for regional clients.

Oleon's journey in Conroe began in June 2023 with the acquisition of the former Newpark facility. Initially serving as a storage and blending site, the plant has now transitioned into a full-scale production hub. Despite temporary delays earlier this year due to local permitting requirements, the company successfully resolved these issues with city officials to move forward with its expansion plans.

James De Caluwé, Oleon's Chief Operations Officer, explained that Conroe was selected for its strategic proximity to the Houston oil and gas community, which represents the company's primary customer base. The location also offers vital access to the Port of Houston and a skilled local workforce. The current phase employs between 40 and 50 people, with potential growth to 120 as operations reach full scale in the future.

Antoine Prevost, CEO of Oleon, emphasized that local production is key to meeting the needs of the North American market more efficiently. By manufacturing closer to customers, the company can enhance its service and collaborate on high-performance, bio-based solutions. This investment underscores Oleon's commitment to oleochemistry and the utilization of renewable raw materials in everyday products.
