Malta’s agricultural landscape is set for a significant technological upgrade following a €930,000 investment by BSS Ltd to establish a modern olive processing facility in Rabat. The project, titled 'Innovation and Sustainability for Maltese Olive Oil Production', is co-financed by European funds under Malta’s Common Agricultural Policy Strategic Plan.

The new facility is modernising Malta’s olive oil sector through the introduction of advanced processing technology, which is expected to enhance productivity, quality, and innovation in local production. Approximately 2,000 farms and olive producers are projected to utilise the facility each year, benefiting from improved access to high-end processing services.

Minister for European Funds, Social Dialogue and Consumer Protection Keith Azzopardi Tanti attended the inauguration, emphasizing the long-term impact on the farming community. 'When we invest European funds in agriculture, we are investing in the work and future of our farmers. Through this project, farmers are being given access to more modern technology to help them improve the quality of their products and strengthen their position in the market,' he stated.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo highlighted that the investment serves as a crucial step in strengthening the competitiveness of Maltese olive oil. He noted that modern infrastructure is vital for encouraging younger generations to enter the agricultural sector, viewing it as a sustainable career path. 'By continuing to invest in technology and innovation, we are making the agricultural sector more attractive to younger generations,' Minister Refalo added.

Kurt Grima, General Manager of BSS Ltd, underscored the company’s dedication to Malta’s olive-growing heritage. As a family business, BSS aims to support producers of all scales, from hobbyists with a few trees to commercial growers with hundreds. This modernisation effort demonstrates the effective use of European funds to combine traditional quality with contemporary industrial standards, ensuring a sustainable future for the local industry.
