The Malaysian government has officially cleared domestic plantation companies of any involvement in the forest fires currently occurring in Indonesia. Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil announced that thorough cross-checks conducted by the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities have confirmed that no Malaysian entities were responsible for burning activities.
According to the Minister, Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad presented these findings during a recent Cabinet meeting. The investigation revealed that the fire incidents took place entirely outside the boundaries of oil palm concessions owned by Malaysian firms. In one specific instance, a fire reportedly originated outside a Malaysian-owned plantation and spread into a five-hectare area within the estate; however, the blaze was successfully extinguished.
In response to the situation and the ongoing regional concern regarding transboundary haze, Fahmi, acting as the MADANI Government spokesperson, stated that the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) will initiate a special engagement session. This session will involve all Malaysian plantation companies currently operating in Indonesia to ensure continued compliance and proactive management. The issue of recurring land and forest fires remains a critical point of concern for Southeast Asian nations, including Singapore and the Philippines, due to the environmental and health impacts of cross-border haze.
