Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to remaining a reliable supplier of sustainable palm oil to India.

In this context, Anwar and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi encouraged deeper cooperation in oil palm cultivation.

According to a joint statement issued by the two countries, both sides also agreed to cooperate in developing the palm oil value chain, including downstream industries and high-value-added palm-based products.

The statement said both sides also agreed to engage relevant organizations to resolve market-access issues promptly.

Meanwhile, the statement noted that the two leaders emphasized the importance of the Malaysia-India Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (MICECA) and the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA).

Anwar and Modi welcomed the ongoing review of AITIGA to make it mutually beneficial, trade-facilitating, and aligned with current global trade practices.

The statement added that both leaders also appreciated MICECA’s potential to deepen economic relations and encouraged its optimal use.

Modi highlighted India’s role as a key investment destination for Malaysian companies, while Anwar welcomed the strong presence of Indian manufacturing and technology companies, which have contributed to the creation of high-skilled jobs in Malaysia.

The statement continued: “The two leaders recognized connectivity as a key determinant and enabler of stronger economic cooperation. In this context, they appreciated the growing air and sea connectivity between the two countries and agreed to further enhance it.”
