The All India Edible Oil Traders Federation has issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Maharashtra government, demanding the immediate withdrawal of new Food and Drug Administration (FDA) restrictions on the sale of loose edible oil. The federation, which strongly opposes the new regulations, has warned of both legal action and a statewide agitation if the decision is not reconsidered within the stipulated timeframe.

This firm stance follows a critical meeting held in Nashik on Sunday, where approximately 500 edible oil traders from 36 districts converged to discuss the FDA's decision. Participants deliberated on the potential economic hardships for traders traditionally involved in loose oil sales, retailers, and lower-income consumers, as well as the proposed penalties against non-compliant traders and the strategy for future protests.

Traders articulated that while they do not object to enforcement actions against those who violate food safety standards, they believe it is unfair to apply a universal standard to all traders. They expressed significant apprehension regarding the adverse economic repercussions that could arise from these new restrictions.

During the Nashik gathering, a resolution was passed stating that should the government fail to revoke its decision within 15 days, the federation intends to file a legal petition challenging the restrictions. It was also decided to escalate the matter to the Central Government. The federation leaders cautioned that a lack of a favorable response from the government would lead to a united, intensified statewide agitation.

Key officials present at the meeting included All India Edible Oil Traders Federation National President ShankarbhaI Thakkar, Vice-President Prakashbhai Patel, National General Secretary Tarunbhai Jain, alongside Transport Association Vice-President Subhash Thakkar, Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce Vice-President Sunita Phalgune, Maharashtra President Santosh Mandlecha, Western Maharashtra Vice-President Hitesh Kapadia (Kolhapur), Vidarbha Vice-President Piyush Jain, and Sambhajinagar District President Kachrubhau Velunjkar, among other office-bearers and traders from various districts.
