A severe drought attributed to the El Niño weather phenomenon is currently wreaking havoc on palm oil logistics in Indonesia’s West Kalimantan province. The drop in water levels across critical waterways has severely hindered the transport of palm oil products, leading to a significant spike in operational expenses for producers.

The Kapuas River, which serves as the primary logistical artery for the region, has reached levels so low that traditional barge transport is becoming unviable. As a result, palm oil companies are being forced to explore more expensive overland routes or alternative shipping methods. Furthermore, the resulting delays are inflating storage costs; since crude palm oil (CPO) must be kept at specific temperatures to prevent solidification and maintain quality, prolonged storage requires continuous heating, adding to the energy burden.

These logistical bottlenecks have caused a ripple effect throughout the local industry. Some palm oil mills, facing near-capacity storage facilities due to shipment delays, have been forced to temporarily halt the purchase of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) from local growers. If the drought persists, the resulting supply chain constraints could exert upward pressure on global prices, affecting a wide range of industries including the cosmetics, personal care, and food sectors that rely heavily on palm-derived ingredients.
