JAKARTA – Indonesia is set to cease all diesel imports by July 1, 2026, a move anticipated following the nation's successful implementation of B50 biodiesel production utilizing domestic palm oil resources. President Prabowo Subianto announced this ambitious target during his address at the Annual MPR Session and Joint Session of the DPR and DPD at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday, August 14.
President Subianto underscored the substantial economic benefits of this policy, projecting annual foreign exchange savings of up to Rp170 trillion, equivalent to approximately 9.5 billion US dollars. He stated, 'Starting July 1, 2026, we will no longer import solar.' This cessation, he noted, is directly attributable to Indonesia's advancements in producing B50 biodiesel.
B50 biodiesel is defined as a fuel blend comprising 50 percent palm oil-based biodiesel and 50 percent traditional diesel (solar). This strategic initiative is central to the government's broader efforts to cultivate energy independence and significantly reduce the country's reliance on imported fuels, thereby preserving valuable foreign exchange reserves.
In his speech, President Subianto highlighted that this policy is among 121 'transformative' measures implemented by the government over the past 21 months, or 663 days. He reiterated the administration's commitment to making challenging decisions for the nation's long-term prosperity, emphasizing, 'I did not receive a mandate to explain why the problem could not be resolved, but I received a mandate to solve the problem.'
