India's edible oil imports are projected to surpass last year's volumes by 2026, despite a significant downturn in June, according to the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA). Dr. B.V. Mehta, the Executive Director of SEA, noted that while June imports witnessed a nearly 30% month-on-month decline, cumulative imports for the year-to-date remain approximately 7% higher than the corresponding period last year.
For the current year, SEA anticipates India's edible oil imports to exceed 16 million tons. This upward revision is primarily driven by growing apprehensions regarding the Kharif oilseed crop. Factors contributing to this concern include the erratic progression of the monsoon, a considerably reduced planted area compared to the previous year, and forecasts of diminished rainfall during the critical August–September cultivation period. Furthermore, lower reservoir levels pose a potential negative impact on the subsequent Rabi season crops.
Dr. Mehta highlighted that elevated domestic oilseed prices earlier in the year incentivized farmers to increase sales, thereby bolstering crushing volumes and ensuring sufficient domestic vegetable oil supplies during the first half of the year. However, this trend is expected to reverse, with domestic oil availability projected to decrease between July and September, necessitating increased imports to bridge the anticipated supply deficit.
On the international front, palm oil continues to offer competitive pricing. Nevertheless, Indonesia's implementation of the B50 biodiesel mandate is poised to redirect substantial quantities of palm oil towards biofuel production. This shift is expected to curtail supplies available for the food market, consequently exerting upward pressure on global vegetable oil prices.
SEA also underscored the crucial importance of stable and remunerative prices for both consumers and agricultural producers. Dr. Mehta emphasized that maintaining profitable returns for oilseed growers is vital to stimulate further investment in oilseed cultivation and enhance overall crop productivity.
