A fierce debate is unfolding in the United States over vegetable oils, particularly sunflower oil and canola oil, driven by the "Make America Healthy Again" campaign led by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Kennedy is urging Americans to abandon what he calls the "hateful eight" — oils derived from sunflower, canola, soybean, corn, cottonseed, grapeseed, rice bran and safflower — in favour of beef tallow.

Agricultural circles have voiced concern over these remarks. The executive director of the National Sunflower Association wrote to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, highlighting the misinformation circulating about seed oils and their health benefits, saying: "We hope you will be a strong voice for our industry."

For her part, Rollins affirmed her support for all farmers, including oilseed producers, stressing: "I am committed to being an active advocate for the agriculture sector."

Meanwhile, the American Heart Association backs the use of vegetable oils, citing their health benefits due to their low saturated fat content, in contrast to the beef tallow that Kennedy promotes as an alternative. Canola oil in particular is considered a preferred choice among health-conscious consumers because of its low saturated fat content.

This debate could have implications for the US agriculture sector, given that sunflower and canola oils are key ingredients in the food industry. The outcome will depend on the ongoing dialogue between farmers, the government and the public.
