Global food commodity prices rose in February, breaking a five-month streak of consecutive declines. The shift was driven by higher wheat prices, gains across most vegetable oils, and increases in some meat categories, which offset declines in sugar and dairy prices, according to the latest report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

FAO index details

The FAO Food Price Index, which tracks monthly changes in international prices for a basket of key food commodities, stood at the following levels:

  • Current value: 125.3 points in February.
  • Monthly change: up 0.9% from a revised January reading.
  • Annual change: down 1.0% compared with the same period last year.

Vegetable oil price trends

The FAO Vegetable Oil Price Index climbed 3.3% in February, reaching its highest level since June 2022. Price movements varied by oil type as follows:

  • Palm oil: prices rose on the back of growing global import demand, coinciding with a seasonal drop in production across Southeast Asian producing countries.
  • Soybean oil: prices increased, supported by expectations of supportive biofuel policies in the United States.
  • Rapeseed oil: prices recovered on expectations of stronger import demand for Canadian supplies.
  • Sunflower oil: bucked the upward trend with a modest decline, partly attributed to ample export supplies from Argentina.
