The Food Industries Chamber, affiliated with the Federation of Egyptian Industries, organized a meeting for the oils and derivatives sector under the supervision of Dr. Zakaria El-Shafei to assess the current and future situation of the oils industry in Egypt.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the National Food Safety Authority and the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality, as well as a number of member manufacturers from the chamber.

The meeting addressed several topics, including the implementation of inspection standards by the Food Safety Authority at edible oil factories, projects to update standard specifications for sector products, and the services provided by the chamber.

Dr. El-Shafei highlighted the state’s interest in expanding the cultivation of oilseed crops, especially canola, to localize the edible oil industry in Egypt.

He explained that domestic consumption is estimated at around 2.2 million tonnes annually, with a heavy reliance on imported raw materials.

El-Shafei emphasized the chamber’s cooperation with the Industrial Modernization Center to develop a strategy for advancing the oils industry, along with coordination with relevant authorities to update specifications and strengthen the competitiveness of Egyptian products.

The meeting discussed amending inspection checklists for member factories with the Food Safety Authority, taking into account the special nature of the oils industry.

The chamber also presented the services it offers factories to help them comply with food safety requirements.

Representatives of government bodies confirmed their readiness to cooperate with the chamber and receive proposals regarding inspection standards and specifications.

Recently approved specifications were reviewed, and projects to update some oil-related standards were discussed.
