Dr Sherif Farouk, Egypt's Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, issued Decree No. 171 on Tuesday, 8 October 2024, concerning controls on the trading of food commodities covered by Cabinet Decision No. 2071 of 2024.

Article One of the decree defines the seven commodities covered by the aforementioned Cabinet decision as blended oil, rice, sugar, beans, milk, pasta and white cheese.

Article Two prohibits producing, importing, supplying and packaging companies from withholding these commodities and concealing them from sale.

Article Three requires producing, importing, supplying and packaging companies to issue tax sales invoices containing details of the products and commodities concerned, including the type of product, quantity and factory selling price. Article Four of the decree also requires the aforementioned companies to notify their local supply directorates, on the first Sunday of each month, of the quantities of goods they hold, along with product descriptions, production dates, quantities held in warehouses, storage locations, quantities sold, and the parties they deal with, including traders and distributors.

The supply directorates are, in turn, required to notify the Ministry of Supply of this data, while Article Five requires the Ministry of Supply to notify the Deputy Prime Minister who heads the Information Centre of the same data.

Article Six prohibits companies from tampering with any of the decree's provisions, and anyone who violates any article of the ministerial decree will be subject to penalties under the applicable law in this regard.
