AI Algorithms Lift Biodiesel Yield from Used Cooking Oil

A recent scientific study has revealed the potential of leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies to enhance the production of biofuel derived from used cooking oil, enabling its use as an alternative fuel for diesel engines.

The findings were published in the Scientific Reports journal on Saturday. Researchers from the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology and Manipal University of Higher Education in India employed machine learning algorithms to identify the optimal conditions for biodiesel production, while also examining the properties of the resulting fuel and the performance of engines running on it.

Laboratory experiments demonstrated that the use of machine learning algorithms contributed to achieving a high yield of biofuel extracted from used cooking oil. Engines operating on a blend of biofuel and conventional diesel recorded a notable reduction in carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions, along with improved thermal efficiency — without requiring any mechanical modifications to the engines.

The researchers noted that recycling used cooking oil and converting it into biofuel offers a viable pathway to reducing organic waste and giving it a second life. At the same time, AI provides effective tools to streamline production processes and determine the most suitable operating conditions.

These results come as part of broader efforts to develop more sustainable fuel sources and maximize the value of organic waste streams. However, the researchers emphasized that scaling up the technology to commercial levels will require further testing and technical and economic evaluation.
